Regulations for safety showers and eye wash units

To create a safe work environment, there are a number of national and European regulations and recommendations regarding safety shower equipment.

"The purpose of the safety shower is to quickly extinguish a fire in clothing or to quickly remove a substance from the body." (Swedish Work Environment Authority regulation AFS 1999:7)

Below are some of the points addressed in various regulations and recommendations:

  • Location and accessibility of equipment
  • Handling and activation of emergency equipment
  • Amount of water, flow and possible drainage
  • Good water quality
  • Temperate water, bacterial growth
  • The environment where the emergency shower equipment is located (corrosion, low temperatures)
  • Eyewash
  • Signs, warning labels and warning signals
  • Procedures, training and written documentation
  • Control and maintenance

"The employer shall ensure that emergency showers and eye wash units are checked at least once every six months, and that the control is documented." (Swedish Work Environment Authority regulation AFS 2020:1)

Safety showers in potentially explosive atmospheres (ATEX)

In industries where flammable gases and liquids are handled or where dust, vapour or mist is generated that can create an explosive atmosphere, it is important to ensure that the safety shower equipment meets the relevant ATEX requirements.

All FSP-Tech®'s safety showers and eye wash units in a standard version

  • are suitable for use in explosive environments in zones 1 & 2
  • has ATEX certification for category EX II 2G
  • has ATEX risk assessment and statement from TÜV RheinlandIndustrie Service

ATEX certification for category EX II 2D (dust) can be supplied on request.

In cases where safety showers and eye wash units are customised with various options, it is important that the options are ATEX classified as well.
