Mechanical Shoe Seal for Aluminum Internal Floating Roofs
HMT’s Retro-Fit Mechanical Shoe Seal was designed to solve a common problem in the oil industry: how to add a primary mechanical shoe seal safely and effectively to an existing lightweight aluminum IFR. This seal employs a unique system of pontoons to provide additional buoyancy required at the perimeter and a compression ring to give the rim added strength and torque resistance to handle the drag forces exerted by the shoe seal. The Retro-Fit Mechanical Shoe Seal provides a long service life, compatibility with virtually all stored products, and a tight fit to aid in eliminating emissions losses.

Design features
Supplemental buoyancy to offset mechanical shoe system
Supported by a system of buoyant pontoons — each pontoon is held in place by extruded structural aluminum framing for excellent strength and rigidity.
Compression ring
The Retro-Fit Mini-Shoe employs a compression ring system to tie together the existing rim and Mini-Shoe hangers to form a strong and rigid perimeter structure that is strong enough to handle the weight, centering forces, and drag forces of a quality mechanical shoe seal.
Hardened steel pressure components
Custom-hardened steel will not fatigue over time, maintaining proper sealing pressure against the tank shell and preventing gaps over the life of the seal.
Even pressure distribution
Each shoe is equipped with three sets of pusher bars, for a total of six pressure zones. This ensures even pressure distribution and allows the shoe to conform well to local anomalies in shell roundness.
Designed for tight rim spaces
The innovative feature of this seal is the HMT Mini-Shoe hanger assembly. It successfully maintains positive gap-sealing ability while accommodating rim spaces as small as 63.5 mm.
Best-in-class vapor barriers
Premium fabrics ensure optimal product compatibility and long service life, including flame retardant PTFE according to DIN 22118.
Sized to fit the tank
Every tank shell is unique, and the seal must be designed to handle specific edge spaces. HMT's design and automated manufacturing allows each seal to be manufactured exactly to the customer's edge space and/or verticality data, ensuring optimum performance and minimising the risk of operational problems over time.
