Aluminum Domes for Aboveground Storage

HMT's aluminum dome has a free span and an all-aluminium, lightweight and corrosion-resistant construction that sets a new standard for aluminum dome performance.

HMT's unique clamped panel design, combined with high accuracy in critical details, provides a cost-effective solution that offers superior protection for the stored product. HMT's geodesic dome can be installed in service and fully complies with API 650 Appendix G and AWWA D-108.

Benefits

  • Market-leading precipitation runoff
HMT's clamped panel construction provides concentrated sealing pressure along all cover strips. This unique solution provides better sealing pressure than traditional panel-to-beam fixing systems.
  • Reduced emissions
HMT's aluminum dome is a very effective way to optimise tank emissions, both for new tanks and for refurbishments. The free-span design requires no intermediate supports, resulting in lower emissions than traditional fixed steel roofs.
  • Low maintenance requirements
Aluminum requires no painting or surface treatment for maintenance and is naturally resistant to the effects of the marine environment.
  • Complies with current standards
API Standard 650 requires compliance with the Aluminum Design Manual (ADM), including structural design using second-order, non-linear analysis. This methodology ensures that all structural members remain within allowable stress levels even when secondary, localised loads act in addition to the primary load cases. The methodology has been a requirement of API Standard 650 for several years and better accounts for real-world combinations of loads.
  • Quick installation
HMT's clamp panel design has been proven to provide shorter installation times than traditional systems, which is a major advantage for both contractors and plant owners who want to get their tanks back in operation quickly.
  • Capable of being installed in service
Retrofit domes can be easily installed on existing external floating roofs while the tank is in operation. The installation can be done next to the tank if space is available, or directly on top of the floating roof while the tank is filled. For small and medium diameters, the installation can even be done without hot work.

Design features

Clamped panel construction
HMT's unique clamping pan design provides higher clamping force and greater packing pressure in the seals.

Free span
Geodesic dome structures can easily span even the world's largest aboveground storage tanks without intermediate supports. This results in a fixed roof structure with lower maintenance needs and lower emissions.

Optimised design and ADM compliance
HMT domes are sized specifically for each tank and according to local and regional regulations. The load-bearing geometry is optimised to meet the requirements of API 650 Appendix G and the latest edition of the Aluminum Design Manual, including the requirement for second-order, non-linear analysis.
