Mechanical bulkhead seal for internal aluminium floating roofs

The HMT Retro-Fit Mechanical Shoe Seal is designed to solve a common problem in the AST industry: how to safely and effectively install a primary mechanical shoe seal on an existing lightweight aluminium IFR. The seal uses a unique system of pontoons to provide extra buoyancy around the edge and a compression ring to strengthen the edge and provide torsional rigidity to handle the tensile forces exerted by the shoe seal. The Retro-Fit Mechanical Shoe Seal offers long life, compatibility with almost all stocked products and a tight fit that minimises emission losses.

Construction details

Extra buoyancy for mechanical shoe systems
Supported by a system of pontoons held in place by extruded aluminium frame for high strength and rigidity.

Compression ring
The compression ring ties the existing edge and Mini-Shoe hangers together to create a strong and rigid structure that can withstand the weight, centring forces and tensile forces of a quality mechanical shoe seal.

Hardened steel pressure components
Specially hardened steel does not fatigue over time, maintains the correct sealing pressure against the tank shell and prevents leakage throughout the life of the seal.

Even pressure distribution
Each shoe is equipped with three sets of pressure bars, totalling six pressure zones, ensuring even pressure distribution and good adaptation to local deviations in tank shell roundness.

Designed for tight edge spaces
The HMT Mini-Shoe hanger allows sealing even at edge spaces as small as 63.5 mm and maintains positive gap sealing.

Top-class vapour barriers
Premium fabrics ensure optimal product compatibility and long service life, including flame retardant PTFE according to DIN 22118.

Adapted to the tank
Every tank shell is unique, and the seal must be designed to handle specific edge spaces. HMT's design and automated manufacturing allows each seal to be manufactured exactly to the customer's edge space and/or verticality data, ensuring optimum performance and minimising the risk of operational problems over time.
