Aluminator 1000

Heavy-duty internal aluminium floating roof

HMT's Aluminator 1000 was developed in 1992 in response to the market need for a high strength aluminium skin and pontoon type internal floating roof, capable of performing more like a steel IFR. This heavy-duty roof uses a robust system of load-bearing beams and load-transferring joints that will not fatigue under repeated operational loads and has a significantly longer service life than other skin and pontoon-type AIFR solutions.

Aluminator 1000 is ideal for tanks with high duty cycles and high flow rates, or for applications where very long service life is required.

Advantages of the programme

  • Withstands high flows and dynamic loads
Aluminator 1000 is designed to handle the turbulence that can occur at high flows. The load-bearing system - with a heavy-duty extruded periphery, rough beams and load transfer joints - is designed to withstand dynamic loads without fatigue or deterioration.
  • Copes with high cycle counts
The Aluminator 1000 is well suited for tanks with frequent filling and emptying cycles. The high-strength periphery and extra buoyancy at the edge handle tensile forces and torques without fatigue, even after many years of intensive operation.
  • Can be used with all sealing systems, including wax scrapers
The heavy-duty extruded periphery is designed to handle the weight, tensile forces and torque of mechanical shoe seals and can be easily adapted for shoe-mounted wax scrapers with additional pressure systems.
  • Quick and simple installation
The Aluminator 1000 jointing system enables fast and repeatable assembly. All components can be inserted through a standard manhole.
  • Long life span
The Aluminator 1000 is an ideal choice for tanks that require high reliability and very long technical lifetime.

Construction details

Two-way load-bearing structure
The Aluminator 1000 uses a system of load-bearing beams that relieve the pontoons from bending and shear stresses. Traditional skin and pontoon AIFRs often use the pontoons as load-bearing elements, while the Aluminator 1000 uses transverse beams for the primary loads. This protects the pontoons and extends the life of the roof.

Powerful periphery
The peripheral structure is extruded in high-strength aluminium and is connected to the main structure with torque-resistant joints that can withstand sealing tensile forces and edge torques without fatigue.

Load transferring dressing systems
The innovative connection system is designed to handle load transfer throughout the structure without fatigue over time. The unique siding of the main beams accommodates all connections and transfers loads between components without applying shear stresses to the fasteners.

”Smart” buoyancy system
The Aluminator 1000 uses pontoons with a diameter of 10 inches (≈ 25.4 cm), which are also shorter than on most lighter AIFRs. This allows for optimal placement where tensile forces and dead weight are greatest and reduces the risk of buckling under dynamic loads. Each pontoon is fitted with a threaded test port for future gas-free inspection.

25 % thicker plate
The Aluminator 1000 uses cladding plate that is 25 % stronger than API requirements and most other AIFR models, providing extra safety for future maintenance personnel.
