Candle filters for droplet separation

Candle filters are used for the separation of droplets <2µm at low gas flow velocities.

Each candle filter consists of millions of packed fibres. The efficiency of a single fibre is low, but the cumulative effect is high. In order for Brownian diffusion to be effective, i.e. to separate droplets <2µm, it is necessary that the gas has a low entry velocity.

Candle filters are used to efficiently recover product in various processes, remove visible plumes from chimneys and to reduce emission levels.

Candle filters for effective separation of droplets <2µm

Design and function

Each candle filter consists of millions of packed fibres. The efficiency of a single fibre is low, but the cumulative effect is high. In order for Brownian diffusion to be effective, i.e. to separate droplets <2µm, it is necessary that the gas has a low entry velocity. Brownian diffusion is described in more detail below.

Candle filters are installed vertically in a tower and the gas passes horizontally through the filter wall. Inside the filter, the droplets coalesce and are then drained from the filter by gravity.

There is a wide variety of fibre materials to choose from: glass, carbon, polypropylene, polyester, teflon, etc.

Brownian diffusion

Brownian diffusion occurs at low gas velocities, normally below 0.2 m/s and maximum up to 0.25 m/s, when the gas passes through a bed of very fine fibres. The small liquid droplets collide with the surrounding gas molecules, forcing the liquid droplets to move in different directions and eventually collide with the fibres in the bed. The smaller the diameter of the fibre, the smaller the liquid droplets that can be captured from the gas flow.
